Hosur City’s Major Underground Sewerage Project to Improve Sanitation

December 27, 2024

The Government of Tamil Nadu is taking a major step to enhance public health and sanitation in Hosur city, Krishnagiri district. They’ve recently laid the foundation stone for a significant underground sewerage project that promises to modernize the city’s wastewater management system.

This ambitious project will be implemented in two phases, ensuring comprehensive coverage for the entire Hosur City Municipal Corporation (HCMC) area.

Phase 1: Building a Foundation for Cleaner Water

The first phase of the project focuses on constructing two state-of-the-art sewage treatment plants (STPs):

  • Santhapuram STP: This plant will have a capacity to treat 12.51 million liters of sewage per day (mld).
  • Ramanaikken STP: This larger plant will boast a capacity of 20.13 mld.

Both STPs will utilize advanced sequential batch reactor (SBR) technology, a highly efficient method for treating wastewater. This technology involves a series of treatment steps within a single reactor tank, making it compact and effective.

Phase 1 will provide partial or full sewerage coverage to 35 out of the 45 wards within the HCMC area. This phase is being implemented on a design, build, operate and transfer (DBOT) basis, meaning a private company will design, construct, and operate the facilities for a specified period before transferring ownership to the government. The estimated cost for this phase is Rs 5,825.4 million.

Phase 2: Expanding Coverage and Benefits

The second phase of the project will extend the underground sewerage network to cover the remaining 10 wards in the HCMC area. This will ensure that the entire city benefits from improved sanitation and wastewater management.

Positive Impacts on Hosur City

This comprehensive underground sewerage project is expected to bring numerous benefits to Hosur city, including:

  • Improved public health: By effectively treating wastewater, the project will reduce the risk of waterborne diseases and improve overall public health.
  • Enhanced sanitation: The project will contribute to a cleaner and more hygienic environment for residents.
  • Environmental protection: Proper wastewater treatment will help protect water resources and the surrounding ecosystem.
  • Improved quality of life: The project will enhance the overall quality of life for residents by providing a more sustainable and healthy living environment.

The Hosur city underground sewerage project is a significant investment in the city’s future, demonstrating the government’s commitment to providing essential infrastructure and improving the well-being of its citizens.
