RRTS Progress
The Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor is set for a significant milestone as the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) gears up to conduct the first trial run of the Namo Bharat train on the Delhi section by late 2024. The NCRTC, responsible for implementing India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), is making rapid progress on the project.
According to NCRTC officials, the civil construction of the viaduct in Delhi is nearing completion, with ongoing work at the station premises advancing steadily. Puneet Vats, Chief Public Relations Officer at NCRTC, stated, “The construction of the RRTS viaduct in the Delhi section of the Delhi-Meerut corridor is almost complete. We anticipate starting trial runs in Delhi by the end of this year. The RRTS stations at Sarai Kale Khan, New Ashok Nagar, and the underground station at Anand Vihar in Delhi are already taking shape, with finishing work currently underway.”
NCRTC plans to invite the Commission of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for inspection after completing the signalling and telecommunication work on the Delhi section. The CMRS inspection will focus on critical aspects necessary for commencing operations, including infrastructure and rolling stock interactions, track conditions, and signalling systems. Once clearance is obtained, NCRTC will begin deploying Namo Bharat trains on this section for public use.
The Delhi section of the RRTS corridor spans 9 km of elevated track and 5 km of underground track. Officials report that viaduct construction for the elevated section up to Sarai Kale Khan station is complete, with track laying and overhead electrification (OHE) installation currently in progress.
Current operation
Currently, Namo Bharat trains operate across eight stations, covering a 34 km stretch from Sahibabad station to Modi Nagar North station on the 82 km RRTS corridor. Officials note that the Meerut South RRTS station is nearing completion and is expected to be commissioned by the end of the year, extending the operational length of the RRTS corridor to 42 km.
