The Maharashtra state government has approved ₹1 crore for the preparation of an Alternative Analysis Report (AAR) and a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Pune Metro Phase 2, in accordance with the guidelines set by the Government of India.
Background
- Completion of Pune Metro Phase 1: The first phase of the Pune Metro project, which includes two corridors—the north-south corridor (Purple Line) and the east-west corridor (Aqua Line)—was successfully completed in stretches. The final stretch was made operational on November 29, 2024. The entire Phase 1 covers a total of 33.2 km with 30 stations.
Approval Details
- Order Issued: Vijay Chaudhari, deputy secretary of the State Urban Development Department, issued an order confirming the approval of funds for Phase 2.
- Maha-Metro Involvement: The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has been assigned the task of preparing the AAR and DPR for Phase 2. The project encompasses seven new metro lines, extending the network by 82.5 km across various parts of Pune.
Project Highlights
- New Metro Extensions: The planned extensions include routes from:
- Khadakwasla to Kharadi (via Swargate and Hadapsar),
- Paudphata to Manikbaug (via Warje),
- Ramwadi to Wagholi,
- Vanaz to Chandni Chowk.
- Funding Structure: The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs will cover 50% of the total cost under the Urban Transport Planning and Capacity Building Scheme. The remaining funds will be provided by the state government, which has already released a subsidy grant of ₹39.72 lakh to Maha-Metro.
- Officials’ Remarks: Atul Gadgil, director of works at Maha-Metro, confirmed that both the central and state governments are equally sharing the cost of preparing the AAR and DPR for the seven new metro lines.
Pune Metro Phase 2 Progress
- Previous Approvals: In August 2023, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the state government gave their nod to begin work on the second phase of the metro project. This expansion is aimed at addressing the growing transportation needs of Pune’s urban population.
