The Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC) has indefinitely paused the extension of Metro Line 1C from Badi Chaupar to Transport Nagar, according to insiders.
A senior JMRC official revealed that the suspension followed directives from the state government. The official explained that they were asked to decelerate the expansion of Metro Line 1C, resulting in the project’s halt. However, the exact reasons for this decision remain unclear, the official mentioned anonymously.
Urban Development and Housing (UDH) Minister Jhabar Singh Kharra and Department Secretary Vaibhav Galriya have not yet responded to requests for comments. JMRC sources speculate that two main factors could be behind the delay: the government might be reconsidering the metro’s alignment due to the planned satellite bus terminus at Transport Nagar, and there could be concerns regarding the availability of funds.
A JMRC official indicated that the proposed Transport Nagar metro station would be located near the satellite bus terminal, but the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has yet to designate land for this project. The government may revisit the metro’s alignment once the terminal’s land is finalised, the official suggested.
In 2022, then-Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had sanctioned ₹9.93 billion for the construction of Line 1C. Another official hinted that the government might be delaying fund allocation until the route alignment is confirmed.
Meanwhile, the extension of Metro Line 1D, connecting Mansarovar and the 200-feet Bypass, is progressing smoothly, with completion expected by the end of 2025.
